Lot 53 - District Nursing Centenary Set of 1

A$1.50

This 33cent stamp was issued in March 1985.

This stamp celebrates 100 years of the Melbourne District Nursing Society, which was Founded in 1885.  It was inspired by Scotland's District Nursing system.

Nurses walked, sometimes with bicycles, to homes in the suburbs and provided care to the poor to ease the pressure on hospitals.

Still operational in a form today, it was a pioneer in providing home-based care, which, historically, was so necessary when battling epidemics like typhoid.
